When my son went to college and would come home for various breaks, it was inevitable that he would sleep an inordinate amount of hours. At first, it was a little frustrating because I scheduled time to be off from work so we could hang out together but he would sleep 3/4 of the day away. I didn’t have the heart to wake him up as I assumed he was really tired from being away at school.

After this happened several times, he confessed that he had no idea why when he came home, it seemed that all he wanted to do was rest. We concluded that perhaps it was a safe space for him. Returning to the familiar, returning to a place where he felt at ease and at peace.

Our spiritual journeys mirror that. We begin at a place of oneness, of unity with The Divine. Yet along our life journey, we encounter things that begin to bind us and become obstacles. We find ourselves feeling disconnected from God. At some point when this happens is inevitable that we come face-to-face with all the things that hold us captive. At that moment, we have the opportunity to make decisions that either keep us in our own bondage (sin) or begin to unravel the chains and break free. When we break free, we begin the journey back from where we first came.

Home. At one with God. The state of being that is perfect love and perfect peace.

That is the original gospel. Where are you on the journey?
